Ensemble sans maître was founded in 2010 by five ambitious grad students who were determined to bring their youthful fire and focus to Pierre Boulez’s Le marteau sans maître. Since then, the group has been committed to performing unusual repertory and commissioning new works from young, emerging composers. The unique timbre of the ensemble's instrumentation - flute, viola, guitar, percussion, and voice - lends itself not only to Boulez's serial masterwork but also to contemporary compositions of indeterminate instrumentation. In the past year, Ensemble sans maître has tackled more than 20 works, including eight world premieres, and is currently commissioning six composers to write quintets for a series of concerts in Spring/Summer 2013.
